SBANE will kick off its 2010-2011 Breakfast Series Program early this year with an August event, highlighting keynote speaker Rhode Island State Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts. Roberts advocates quality, affordable healthcare, economic development and job growth, and open government.

Roberts will discuss some of Rhode Island's most pressing issues, including her efforts to recruit new businesses to the state, while also helping existing businesses gain access to credit and contain healthcare costs by fighting premium rate increases. Roberts will speak briefly on the importance of getting federal health reform implemented in the state to maximize the benefit to businesses and families. She will also offer immediate solutions, such as her Buy Local RI campaign, on how the state can create an economic climate that is more locally business-driven, sustainable, friendly and growth-oriented. Lastly, Roberts will discuss the most recent Schilling deal, its controversies, as well as how Rhode Island should approach this opportunity.

Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth H. Roberts was inaugurated as the 68th lieutenant governor of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations on January 2, 2007, making history as the first woman elected to the position. Before serving in the Senate, Roberts worked as a business strategy consultant, policy analyst, and health care manager. Serving in the Rhode Island State Senate from 1997-2007, she received the highest ranking in the General Assembly from Common Cause, Rhode Island's premier government reform organization. Roberts graduated from Brown University in 1978 and earned an MBA in health care management from Boston University.

Roberts currently serves as chair of the Long Term Care Coordinating Council, the Small Business Advocacy Council and the Emergency Management Advisory Council. She is also leading the “Healthy RI: National Health Reform Implementation Task Force” to ensure that the federal law is implemented in Rhode Island in the way that best serves Rhode Island businesses and families.
